Employ Experts To Manage Economy -GDM Tells Mahama
Chairman of the defunct Ghana Democratic Movement, Nana Alex Asabere has charged President John Dramani Mahama to put together a team of experts in Economics and Finance to come out with pragmatic measures to tackle the problems facing the economy.
According to Nana Asabere, the current development points to an emerging economic crisis in the country, adding ‘the situation has been compounded by the fact that the current Minister for Finance and Economic Planning has not demonstrated that he has the competence to deal with the economic problems we are going through.
‘The escalating national debt, with its concomitant widening deficit, together with the skyrocketing cost of doing business, collapsing businesses, over-taxation, high interest rates and utility tariffs that have combined to render many people hopeless under the harsh economic realities of the day, points to an emerging economic crisis in the country that needs a team of experts to tackle,’ he noted.
In a news release issued recently, Nana Asabere said once there was a consensus that the national economy was facing serious challenges, there was the need for the president to look beyond his party and constitute a team of experts who have what it takes to help solve the problem.
‘Whenever there is national crisis, a leader who thinks about his country and the wellbeing of his people would be prepared to go every length to get the expertise needed to tackle the problem. In this regard, such a leader does not consider whether the person or persons with the required expertise are from his party or not. What is more important is that there is a crisis situation and the person or persons identified can help address the situation. That is what I expect President Mahama to do instead of relying on his current team, especially the Finance Minister, who is compounding the problems,’ Nana Asabere posited.
Making reference to the economic crisis of the United Kingdom during the administration of Margaret Thatcher, Nana Asabere recalled: ‘During that difficult times in the history of the Great Britain, Margaret Thatcher, who was determined to handle the crisis in order to bring some relief to her people employed the service of Nigel Lawson, who was not a member of her party, as the Chancellor of the Exchequer (equivalence of Ghana’s Finance Minister) and that paid off for the nation.’
He added that President Mahama should take inspiration from that and pick experts from outside the ruling NDC and bring them together to tackle the challenges facing the Ghanaian economy.
‘For instance, it would not be out of place to get experts like Dr. Akoto Osei, Kwame Pianim, Dr Nii Moi Thompson and others to come together and help solve the problem. It does not matter their political affiliation. What matters is that they are Ghanaians who have got the requisite expertise that can be utilised to the benefit of the nation. We are heading towards a national economic crisis and President Mahama has no luxury of time to allow Seth Terkper to keep experimenting with the ailing economy,’ Nana Asabere stressed.
He recalled how Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah brought in J.H Mensah, who was from the UP tradition, and others, to come and help with the nation’s economic development, and urged President Mahama to take a cue from that also.
‘It is all about Ghana and not NDC or NPP or CPP. There is crisis in the country and we need experts to fix it. President Mahama should look outside his party to get the experts to deal with the crisis,’ Nana Asabre concluded.
