Eagles performed badly against Cape Verde –Onigbinde

FIFA and CAF Instructor, Chief Adegboye Onigbinde, has described the performance of the Super Eagles against Cape Verde in Wednesday’s international friendly match in Portugal as not impressive of a team going to the Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa.
The former Super Eagles’ coach pointed out that Nigeria’s opponents, Cape Verde also disappointed him with what they played against the Stephen Keshi-tutored team.
“I’m not impressed at all with what the two teams played in the friendly game. I must confess that what Nigeria and Cape Verde played on Wednesday night made me feel sorry for African football. The performance of the two teams was so poor and to me, it falls short of any international standard.
“How can two teams who were using the friendly tie to prepare for the Nations Cup play the way they played on Wednesday? With what I saw, it is saddened that African football is going down in standard,” said Onigbinde, who took the Nigerian team to the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.
Onigbinde noted that he expects the Nigeria’s Eagles to raise their game at the Nations Cup. “I hope the Eagles will play better than what they did against Cape Verde at the Nations Cup. Though the environment of a friendly game is different from when teams are playing a tournament for a trophy, so I expect a determined and purposeful football from all the teams at the Nations Cup,” he said.
Former Nigerian international, Garba Lawal on the other hand believes the Eagles performed better against Cape Verde. He said that for Cape Verde to hold the Nigerian team to a barren draw shows that winning the Nations Cup is open to any of the teams.
“The two teams played a great game. Cape Verde was a good side like our team. With what they played against the Eagles, they would be a team to watch in South Africa. They looked comfortable against us. I could see that they had three to four goal attempts,” said Garba.
