Dora Akunyili’s Diagnosis: Medical Practitioners In Nigeria Attack US Doctors
The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has described as pathetic the diagnostic recommendations made by the United States medical doctors for late former Director General of National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Prof. Dora Akunyili.
Speaking Thursday in Abuja at a press conference, NMA President, Dr. Lawrence Kayode Obembe also decried the lack of trust for medical practitioners in Nigeria by its citizens who would rather go abroad for medical check, warning that the time has come for the confidence in Nigerian doctors to be restored.
“It is very pathetic; diagnosis was carried out on Akunyili in Nigeria but like everything in Nigeria, they said go and confirm in the US or UK, There, they said there was nothing wrong with her, but now it is a different story.
“This is why we have been advocating that every Nigerian should have a medical doctor; through health insurance and community health coverage, we can prevent such cases from happening,” he stated.
Also lending his voice on the issue, the President of National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Dr. Jubril Abdullahi, said Dora’s life would have been saved if the advice by the Nigerian medical team that monitored Akunyili had been taken and the operation recommended carried out.
Akunyili died on June 7, 2014 in India after surviving many death rumours. Following her death, there were report that she died as a result of misdiagnosis of cancer. Doctors in Nigeria had diagnosed that she had cancer but she decided to travel abroad for a second opinion and her doctors in the U.S. countered the diagnosis of the Nigerian doctors saying she was all good.
Family sources disclosed that Dora died of complications arising from uterine cancer.
The late Akunyili’s body arrived the National Hospital, Abuja on Wednesday, June 11.
