Court Fines Man For Beating Wife

The Kumasi Gender Court presided over by Mrs Rita Agyeman-Budu on Thursday sentenced a driver to a fine of GH¢1,200.00 for savagely beating up the wife.

Jacob Addy, alias “Ekow Mensah,” was additionally ordered to compensate the woman with GH¢1,000 and to take care of her medical bills. He was also bonded for two years to be of good behaviour.

Addy, who pleaded guilty, would spend six months in prison if he fails to pay the fine or breaks the bond.

Police Chief Inspector Rose Essuman told the court that the convict is married to one Lily Ampong, a seamstress, and that, they have three children, aged between two and 10 years.

He said the couple lives together at Ayeduase, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), in Kumasi.

He said on March 10, at about 2030 hours, when Addy had just finished his supper, he suddenly started accusing Lily over an incident, which happened about a month earlier.

The prosecution said the woman sensing danger went into their bedroom but he followed her to the place and used the flat side of a machete to hit her several times, as she screamed for help.

A co-tenant went to her rescue and a formal report was made to the police.

An attempt to broker a peaceful settlement through the use of the Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) failed.
