Chris Froome aware of work needed to win Criterium du Dauphine

Froome won the event-opening individual time trial by eight seconds on Sunday, showing incredible speed towards the end of the 10.4kilometre stage in Lyon.

His performance fired an ominous warning to Alberto Contador (Tinkoff-Saxo) and Vincenzo Nibali (Astana), who are expected to be Froome’s main rivals as he tries to defend his crown.

And although Froome acknowledged it was nice to win the opener, he was more than aware of the hard work to come.

“I don’t think it was necessarily the objective to take the yellow jersey today on such a short, flat time trial,” the Team Sky man is quoted as saying by Sky Sports .

“But I couldn’t be happier with the result.
“I’m here to win the race and we’re going to do everything we can.

“Obviously it’s the most important to try and have the yellow jersey at the end of the race, not necessarily right now.

“The Dauphine this year is really hard right from the opening stages.

“I think tomorrow again we can expect a really big race in the mountains.”

Monday’s action will see riders race from Tarare to the top of Col du Beal over 158.5km.
