One person has been confirmed dead and three others hospitalised as cholera breaks out at Kokotenten in the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region.

The latest incident happened less than a month after 15 people were reportedly killed and 855 affected in a similar outbreak in Greater Accra Region.

Francis Osei, the Adansi South District Health Director, said the cholera patient passed on at the Obuasi Government Hospital where he was admitted for treatment.

According to him, the diarrhoea and vomiting of the three other affected people had been brought under control by medical personnel at the St Jude Hospital in Obuasi.

Mr Osei, who announced this, last Friday, blamed the cholera outbreak on poor sanitation conditions and lack of toilet facilities in the district.

He was speaking at the inauguration of two sets of modern water-closet toilet facilities valued GH¢170,000 at Adansi Akrofuom where he urged stakeholders to help the District Health Directorate to sensitise the people on how the spread could be averted, asserting that the health of the citizenry was paramount to the health ministry.

He called on residents to promptly report to any health facility when they notice basic symptoms of cholera, while encouraging them to guard against the deadly Ebola disease.

Kwabena Appiah-Pinkrah, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Akrofuom, who commissioned the two projects, valued GH¢170,000, said he funded them through his share of the common fund and personal incomes from his consultancy services.

According to him, the toilet facilities would help avert the use of water-bodies and bushes as places for convenience by residents.

He called on his colleagues to use their share of the common fund for development in their areas, while affirming his commitment to improve the health, sanitation and education of the people in his constituency.
