Tunisia: Medical Caravan Embarks to Treat Underprivileged Children

“Un Enfant, Des Sourires” (UEDS – or One Child, Many Smiles), a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing the needs of disadvantaged children, will organize a caravan to provide medical supplies and treatment to children attending three rural schools in Ain Dhrahem. This initiative, entitled “Inshallah Labess” – “God willing everything will be alright” in Tunisian Arabic – will embark on the road to Ain Dhrahem in two days. The members of the caravan are scheduled to visit three underprivileged schools – Ouled Dhifallah, Zwitina, and Ouled Khmissa – located near the Algerian border in Tunisia’s mountainous northwestern region

Tunisia: Flag Desecration Leads to Violence At the University of Manouba

Clashes erupted today between Salafists and students affiliated with the the student union at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Manouba, following an altercation that ensued yesterday between two female students wearing the niqab – a veil revealing only the eyes – and the dean. Demonstrators, mainly Salafists, gathered in front of the administration building in protest of yesterday’s incident, and demanded the right for female students to wear the niqab during classes and exams. As the situation on the campus escalated, one of the Salafist students replaced the Tunisian flag with a black flag bearing the shahada – the Islamic declaration of faith

Egypt: Tourism Minister – 3.5 Percent Expected Growth in National Economy

Egypt: Urgent Plan to Salvage Economy

Minister of Finance Momtaz el-Saeed said an agreement has been reached on launching an urgent plan to salvage the Egyptian economy during the coming 18 months. Emerging from a meeting held on Tuesday 6/3/2012, el-Saeed said that the 14 point that agreed on during the meeting including rationalizing spending, reviewing subsidies system, reviewing taxation system without imposing new taxes, restructuring the public debt, attracting new investments, and achieving security in order to back up economy. He said an agreement was reached on continuing negotiations with international corporations and foreign and Arab countries on the proposed financial assistance.

Uganda: BOU Returns Tropical Bank to Libyan Owners

Bank of Uganda has announced the return of Tropical Bank ltd to its majority shareholders, the Libyan Foreign Bank. The central Bank of Uganda took over control of the bank in March last year when the United Nations imposed a freeze on the assets of the government of Libya and associated entities, including the Libyan foreign bank, the majority shareholder of Tropical Bank. This came as a result of a hefty war that swept the country and later led to the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi’s government.

Egypt: Mansour Hassan to Run for President

Head of the ruling Supreme Council of Armed Forces (SCAF)’s Advisory Council, Mansour Hassan, has officially announced his intention to run for president. The 75-year old former Information Minister told the state’s Middle East News Agency that details of his bid will be announced later today. Speculation that Hassan would run for president has circulated widely within the past couple of months
