Lagos – Three men, who claimed to be prophets, were arraigned on Wednesday before an Apapa Chief Magistrates’ Court, for obtaining N1.7 million under false pretences from a businessman, Mr Dama Lawan. The accused persons are Merchart Joseph 25, Lukeman Rasheed 49 and David Agha 40. Prosecutor John Iberedem said the accused would be tried for stealing and obtaining money under false pretences

Governor Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa on Wednesday resigned his position as a member of the House of Representatives. It will be recalled that Dickson was elected governor of Bayelsa State on January 12 after polling 417,500 votes to defeat his opponents.

A civil servant, Mr Kazeem Taiwo, on Wednesday prayed a Grade B Customary Court in Oshodi, Lagos, to dissolve his eight-year-old marriage to save him from committing murder. “Each time I see my wife, my heart burns with anger that I will feel like killing her with my hands,“ Kazeem (39) told the court, alleging that his wife, Hawau, has been troublesome.

Two nurses on Wednesday appeared before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly performing an illegal abortion on a 23-year-old woman. The accused, Marian Adekunle (46) and Blessing Udoh (23) are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and performing abortion.

LAGOS (AFP) – An outbreak of Lassa fever, which according to the World Health Organisation is the causes of some 5,000 deaths annually in west Africa, has killed 40 people and infected dozens of others in a third of Nigeria’s 36 states over the past six weeks, a senior health official said Wednesday. “We have 40 deaths, including two doctors and six nurses, from lassa fever which broke out in 12 states in the past six weeks,” health ministry’s chief epidemiologist Henry Akpan said.
