Captain by example: Captain Gyan: I believe in teamwork

By Prince Dornu-Leiku
Asamoah Gyan is shrugging aside comparism with top players of some of Ghana’s group opponents ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil which is now barely three weeks away.

The man who scored Ghana’s first ever World Cup in Germany in 2006 before adding three more to power the Black Stars to the quarter final of 2010 in South Africa has been labeled a ‘killer’ by Portugal star defender, Pepe.

But Gyan acknowledged his appreciation of the praise by the Real Madrid stopper but refused to be drawn into competition against Portugal captain and star man, Cristiano Ronaldo.

‘I don’t believe in competitions, football is all about teamwork. The more the team will perform determines how well we strikers can also do our job,’ Gyan said after training with the Black Stars on Wednesday.

‘I appreciate what Pepe said that he knows me and my qualities, I really appreciate that. He is also the best defender in their team. In football you can’t predict but as a striker people always expect me to score but I believe in the teamwork,’ Gyan said emphatically.

The Ghana skipper is also calling for focus on Ghana’s three group games at this point in time.

‘We’ve done some before so the expectations are high with everybody watching us if we can repeat our performances and go even further. What’s important is that we must first qualify from the group stage,’ Gyan said.
