A police officer stationed at Gomoa Nyanyano in the Central Region has been arrested for allegedly stealing electric cables.
The suspect, Inspector Emmanuel Ametepey and an accomplice, now on the run, were said to have stolen nine bundles of the electric cables being used for a rural electrification project at Nankese, a village near Agona Odoben in the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District.
According to the Agona Swedru Police, the inspector and his accomplice, identified only as Abu, contracted the driver of a truck with registration number GC 296-10, to cart the stolen items from the village to Kasoa last Thursday evening.
Inspector Ametepey, who claimed ownership of the items, reportedly sat in the front cabin of the truck, apparently to enable them cross all police checkpoints on the main road to their destination.
Briefing the Daily Graphic at Agona Swedru yesterday, the Swedru Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Ahmed Issah Yakubu, said around 7 p.m. the patrol team on the Swedru-Oda highway intercepted the truck loaded with the stolen items on the Breman Asikuma-Swedru road.
He said Inspector Ametepey, who was in a police uniform claimed ownership of the items, while his accomplice followed the truck in a Toyota Avensis Salon car, with registration number GT 1150 Y.
He said the patrol team questioned the Inspector who claimed ownership of the items and in the process asked the driver to speed off.
The patrol team, according to Mr Yakubu, then became suspicious and alerted the leader of the patrol team, who quickly informed the patrol teams at the Kwanyako, Afransi and Winneba barriers.
He said the two vehicles were impounded at the Kwanyako barrier, but Abu absconded, while Inspector Ametepey was apprehended.
The suspect is currently in custody assisting the police in their investigations.
