The Atwima Nwabiagya District Assembly in the Ashanti Region is building a modern market at Abuakwa to facilitate easy access to foodstuffs in the area.

Work on the two-storey market is expected be completed very soon. It will be inaugurated in September this year.

The market consists of 290 stores and a health post and over 1,000 people across the district are to have spaces in it. It is being built by B. D. Constructions.

The District Chief Executive (DCE), Nana Asare Bediako, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic at his office at Nkawie, the district capital.

He said the project, which began in 2010 at the cost of about GH¢1.4 million, was being funded through the assembly’s initiative for Public-Private Partnership (PPP).

The DCE said the market linked other marketers from Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region and Bibiani in the Western Region.

Nana Bediako assured the people of the government’s continuous support to improve their living conditions by giving the old Abuakwa market a facelift.

  Refuse evacuation
The DCE said the assembly had acquired two waste disposal sites at Atwima Koforidua and Tanase and that securing the sites cost the assembly GH¢4,000 and GH¢7,000, respectively.

Both sites, he added, had been secured for five and 10 years, respectively, and could be renewed for future disposals.

There are heaps of refuse at Abuakwa Main Town, Abuakwa Zongo, Abuakwa Asenemaso, Abuakwa Dadease, Atwima Koforidua and Afari.

Nana Bediako stated that an evacuation exercise would soon commence to relieve the people in the affected areas of flies and bad odour emanating from the refuse.
