Asantehemaa Clocks 107


The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, announced her mother’s age during a durbar of queen mothers in Kumasi.

He told the crowd at the forecourt of the Manhyia Palace that her mother would attain  107 years in September, 2014.

The durbar, which was attended by queen mothers across the country, on Tuesday, was to honour of Otumfuo, who celebrated his 15 th  anniversary.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who ascended the throne in 1999, is the son of Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem.

The Asantehene, at the end of his address at the durbar, decided to talk about her mother’s age and her present condition.

The Asantehene elatedly stated that Nana Afia Kobi Ampem was well despite her advanced age.

‘Nana Afia Kobi Ampem, the Asantehemaa is in good health although she had been blessed with many years,’ Otumfuo said.

The Asantehene added that Nana Afia Kobi Serwah Ampem wanted to be part of the durbar of queen mothers.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II said he had a daunting task of convincing the Asantehemaa to stay away from the programme.

He disclosed his deep love and respect for queen mothers in the country, including his mother.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II noted that he always consulted his mother for her opinion when undertaking key decisions as King.

He admonished chiefs in the country to follow his lead by showing maximum respect and support to their queenmothers.

The colourful durbar of queen mothers at the Manhyia Palace was under the theme, ‘Preserving Our Heritage.’

Former President Jerry John Rawlings and his wife, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings, were present at the durbar.

Prominent queen mothers in Ghana, including the Asante Mamponghemaa, Nana Agyarko Difie and the Okyenhemaa, Nana Dokua, were also in attendance.

The queen mother of Denkyira, Nana Ayensu Saraa and other queen mothers through out the country were also present.
