Asamoah Boateng, Akufo Addo Pick Forms To Contest NPP Presidential Primary

Former Mfantsiman West Member of Parliament, Mr Stephen Asamoah Boateng and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo have picked forms to contest the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary.

They both picked the forms in person on Thursday morning at the NPP headquarters in Accra.

Asamoah Boateng on his part declared his motivation for the contest was with God.

“When you are immersed in the Lord and you want to lead and serve, you are motivated.”

“If you don’t know me, I am like the British Bull dog, when I put my teeth in something, I bite and breathe at the same time. I come from Kromantse and Konongo – KK, the two names. Go and find out the characters of people from there. It is to serve the people of Ghana.”

“I was brought up to be humble enough to know that you don’t do politics by yourself. You do that with people and you must be humble enough, sacrifice enough for people to follow what you want to achieve.”

He said that was what gives him the confidence that God was with him.
Asked whether he believed the party would vote for a new leader he responded, “I surely believe the party is looking for a new generational leader. I believe the party is ready to end all factionalism and unite behind a candidate who will bring everybody together.”

“In God’s eyes, the young can be the leader”, he said.

Since the NPP opened nominations for its presidential primary last Friday, the media has turned its attention to the NPP headquarters to capture aspirants trooping in to pick nomination forms.

So far, four aspirants have picked up forms,
Dr Kofi Konadu Apraku and Mr Kofi Osei-Ameyaw, the MP for Asuogyaman sent emissaries to pick their forms early on in the week whilst Nana Addo and Asamoah Boateng pick theirs in person Thursday.

The nomination fee, approved by the National Council, is GH¢10,000 and the filing fee is GH¢75,000.

Mr Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, another front runner in the race is yet to pick his forms.

The NPP’s second highest decision-making body, the National Council (NC), have decided that pursuant to Article 12 of the party’s Constitution, the nominations for the party’s presidential primary for the 2016 general election would open on Friday, June 6, 2014, and close on July 7, 2014.

December 6, 2014, has tentatively been agreed upon as the date for the election of the presidential candidate of the party.

The constitution of the party mandates the party, when in opposition, to open nominations six months before the presidential primary and two years before the general election.

The National Council would reconvene on June 19, 2014 to deliberate on other matters relating to the primary.

Already, the contest is becoming intriguing as the camps of various aspirants are on the field canvassing for votes.
