The threat by the Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) to bring down Nigeria has been dismissed as not only empty but unacceptable to Nigerians.
In its reaction to the threat, the African Youth for Conflict Resolution and Prevention (AYCRP), an Arewa group, in a statement made available to LEADERSHIP, in Kaduna, said, “The Movement for the Emancipation of Niger Delta’s (MEND) threat to bring down Nigeria was unacceptable to Nigerians because Henry Okah was sentenced by a court in South Africa, not in Nigeria. If they have any threat to issue they should do so in South Africa not in Nigeria.”
The Arewa group expressed dismay that it was only in Nigeria that a criminal would be awarded national honour, and even celebrated after serving prison terms. This was just as it noted that, in some cases, the government entered into a fraudulent process called ‘plea bargain’ to let go the criminal.
AYCRP, therefore, warned that, “We will not allow any group or individual to destroy the country because of their selfish interest. Nigeria is supreme and we will not compromise its unity and integrity. We will not be part of those who want to bring down the nation.”
