Angola: Over 9,000 Ex-Unita Militants Defect Into Ruling Party

Menongue — More than 9,000 ex-militants of the main opposition UNITA party joined Saturdday in Menongue, southeastern Kuando Kubango province, the ranks of the ruling MPLA party.

The ceremony of integration of the UNITA defecting militants was witnessed by the ruling party’s vice president, Roberto de Almeida, who considered the event historical in the political affairs and mobilising capacity of the Angolan ruling party.

Addressing the event, MPLA provincial secretary, Higino Carneiro, said similar acts will be taking place over the weekend and next week on a smaller scale, leading to the integration of a total of 10,000 ex-UNITA militants into the ruling party.

According to the politician, this is the result of the dynamics and mobilisation of the activists, cadres and leaders of the party in the province.

“Of course we want to grow, but in an organised and structured way, instilling more and more the ideals of the MPLA, the knowledge of its statutes and programmes, their regulations and governing programme and other goals for the 2012/2017 period,” said

Higino Carneiro.

Meanwhile, speaking on behalf of the new MPLA militants, Afonso Cassanga, an ex-UNITA militant, said they spontaneously decided to defect the organisation they accuse of not being transparent, promoting discord and disobedience to the legitimate powers and confusing the preservation of their noble interests.

He said they freely decided to join MPLA which they believe defends the interests of the Angolan people and pledged to defend the organs of sovereignty and contribute to the reconstruction and sustainable development of Angola.
