Accam, Schlupp are not World Class: Appiah: I chose the best

Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah appears confident that he made the right calls with regards to the 23-man World Cup squad he finalized on Sunday, hours after Ghana’s 1-0 friendly loss to the Netherlands on Saturday night in Rotterdam.

Appiah dropped Leicester City left back Jeffrey Schlupp and Helsingborg winger David Accam, in addition to Jerry Akaminko, who sustained an ankle injury late in the game that ruled him out of Brazil.

The coach hinted that the game against Louis Van Gaal’s Netherlands heavily influenced his decision on who to drop ahead of the Mundial.

‘For me once you want to be a part of the 23 you should be a world class player,’ Appiah explained to pressmen at the post match press conference, a few hours before the announcement came out.

‘If you’re meeting the likes of Robben and Van Persie and you cannot play against them, then I don’t think you deserve to play at the World Cup.’

Appiah also gave his evaluation of the team’s performance against the Dutch.

‘It was a good exercise. As you could see in the second half I could only make six changes so I brought on some of my senior players to see how they’d get along with the younger ones. It was a good game and I was impressed with our performance.’

He revealed why he fielded ‘a weaker team’ against the Robin Van Persie-led Dutch in the first half of the game.

‘I had to be sure about some of my players that’s why I assembled my weaker team in the first half. I won’t even say it’s a weaker team because any player chosen is a qualified but you know you always have a first team and second team.’

The Black Stars are currently in Miami, USA, where they are finalizing preparations for the World Cup. They will play South Korea in a friendly on June 9, after which they will fly out to Brazil ahead of their tournament-opener against the USA in Natal on June 16.
