The government has approved the amount of GHC559 to be paid as monthly allowance to National Service personnel.

Payments of the upward adjustment start from April 1, management of the National Service Secretariat has said.

Acting NSS Executive Director, Ussif Mustapha, in a statement Thursday thanked President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the approval.

He said this will empower service personnel to be committed in the discharge of their duties.

The NSS allowance was increased by President John Mahama in his last days in office.

The allowance was moved from GHC350 to GHC559, nearly two years since it was last increased.

Payment was scheduled to commence in January, however, it did not take place due to the failure of the previous government to factor it in the interim budget for 2017.

Service personnel threatened to march to the Flagstaff House to petition President Akufo-Addo over the delay. They accused the new government of trying to undo the achievement of the previous administration.

Mr Mustapha commended the personnel for their “patience and fruitful periodic engagements and discussions” which led to government’s approval.

“Management wishes, therefore, to urge all national service personnel to reciprocate this gesture by further committing themselves to working even harder to support the government’s effort at improving the economy.”
