The Jomoro Member of Parliament (MP) Mr Paul Essien has in barely two months into office, created jobs for 100 people in his constituency.
He has embarked on large scale onion cultivation in the area to create jobs in fulfillment of his campaign promise and the country’s quest of becoming self sufficient in food production.

Mr Essien disclosed this at Half-Assini in the Western Region.
The MP said about 1000 acres of land at Mpasem, Enzemetianu and Newtown had been earmarked for the project.

He said work begun in February on the Enzemetianu portion of the land where onion nursery and preparation of beds were progressing.
According to the MP, about 2500 workers would be recruited in the constituency for the project.

He said government’s “Planting for Food, “Creating Jobs” campaign, signified its acknowledgement that agriculture was the backbone of Ghana’s economy hence the theme for the Diamond Jubilee: “Mobilising for Ghana’s Future.”

Mr Essien indicated that the programme was designed to encourage everyone to take up farming as part or full time venture.
He urged those in the area with two acres of land or more, for rice and maize cultivation to register with their Assembly members towards the government’s agriculture project.

The MP explained that under the project, government would supply the needed improved seeds and other incentives for the cultivation and buy the produce after harvesting.

On the President’s “One District One Factory” policy, the MP said he was lobbying for an oil refinery and fertilizer factories in the area to create jobs for the teeming unemployed youth.

He said: “It is my utmost priority that the teeming unemployed youth in this Constituency will be provided with the needed jobs within my four years term in office.”
