At least 17 people are feared dead after a huge tree fell on revelers at the Kintampo Water fall in the Brong Ahafo Region Sunday.

Scores of others have been left injured in the accident which occurred between 4:30 pm and 5:30 pm, Myjoyonline.com has learnt.

The victims, largely students of the Wenchi Methodist Senior High School, were on an excursion and swimming in the water when the tumbling tree crushed them to death.

An eyewitness who works with the Information Services Department (ISD) in the Region told Myjoyonline.com there was a rainstorm accompanied by a strong wind and thunder which forced three trees to the ground killing scores and injuring several.

A joint team of personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service and Ghana Police Service are currently on the scene attempting to rescue the injured and trapped victims.

They are using chainsaw machines to cut into pieces the trees that fell on the revelers.

Joy News has gathered at least 18 people who are in very critical condition have been sent to the Kintampo Municipal Hospital for treatment.

Bodies of the students have also been deposited at the Hospital’s morgue.
