The Chief Executive of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has denied allegations that the hospital paid GH¢100,000 to management and staff as Christmas bonus.
Dr Gilbert Buckle was emphatic when he spoke on Joy Midday News Wednesday that the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital “doesn’t pay bonuses and has never paid bonuses”.
The former Board Chairman of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital Professor Mawuli Sallah who made the allegations said a member of management confirmed the payment to him.
He said Dr Buckle received GH¢ 21,000 while other members of the board took home, GH¢17,000 each in extra allowances with each staff member allegedly receiving GH¢100 as motivation.
The former Board Chair said the monies paid as Christmas bonus did not have the approval of the board.
“To me, it was done on our blind side,” he told Joy News adding the payments were unconscionable because the hospital has been struggling to finance plans to improve patient care.
Professor Sallah whose tenure expired less than two weeks ago demanded an investigation into the matter.
But the Korle-bu Dr Buckle has doubted the payments explaining that if Korle-bu were to pay its 6,000-strong staff a GHC100 each, the total bonus payment would be GH¢600,000 not GH¢100,000.
He said it is possible that the payment was an allowance that has finally been processed after a long delay. This cannot be described as Christmas bonus.
“…there is just too much mischief in this thing…where is he getting his information from?” the Chief Executive quizzed backing the calls for further investigations.
