2016 polls: Delay in declaring results disturbing – NPP

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised concerns over the Electoral Commission’s reluctance to commence declaration of presidential results some 18 hours after the close of polls.

The delays, according to the National Youth Organiser of the party, Sammy Awuku is disturbing.

“We are disturbed by the deliberate silence from the National Coalition Centre of the Electoral Commission of Ghana,” he said on Thursday at a news conference.

“The youth of Ghana have voted overwhelmingly for a new leader. The youth of Ghana have decided who their new leader should be and the youth of Ghana overwhelmingly voted for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo,” he added.

He declared during the news conference that Akufo-Addo has won the presidential polls by a huge margin that the results are “unriggable.”

He said out of the 27,577 representing 94.23% of the pink sheets declared at each polling stations and submitted to the NPP’s coalition centre, Akufo-Addo had a “commanding lead of 53.79% to John Mahama’s 44.42%.”

“This translates into 5441642 votes for the NPP’s presidential candidate and 4497477 for the NDC candidate, a clear difference of 944164,” said Mr. Awuku.

He warned that the electoral management body’s continuous delay in declaring the results from Wednesday will needlessly disturb the peaceful that had been witnessed during the electioneering process.

Ghanaians headed to the polls on Wednesday 7, December 2016 to either elect a new president or retain the incumbent President John Mahama of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Mahama was being challenged by six other candidates including Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), and Ivor Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

The rest are Dr. Edward Mahama of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and Jacob Osei Yeboah, independent candidate.
