Great Olympics return to Ghana Premier League

Accra Great Olympics have secured a return to the Ghana Premier League after just a season in Division One.

The Wonder Club beat Mighty Jets 2-1 on Sunday in Teshie in a Zone 3 match to win the top spot with one match left.

However, the story could have been different for them. James Asare put Mighty Jets ahead in the first half but two goals from Maxwell Quaye gave Olympics the victory and a place in the elite division.

Great Olympics had to fight off competition in the zone from former Premier League campaigners, Heart of Lions and Okyeman Planners, which is owned by GFA Vice President, George Afriyie.

Zone 3 winners, Olympics, and Zone 2 winners, Elmina Sharks, owned by PPP Presidential candidate, Paa Kwesi Ndoum, will both play in next season’s Ghana Premier League.

A third winner from Division One will be required from Zone 1 to complete the Premier League slots next season. Bolga Stars lead with 51 points after 27 matches and Real Tamale United (RTU) are second on 47 points but have a game in hand.

Mighty Royals are third on 46 points with 26 matches played. Mighty Royals play Berekum Arenals on Wednesday September 28 and RTU face Berlin FC in Techiman on the same day.
