The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, has tasked legislators of the opposition New Patriotic Party to use their share of the MPs’ Common Fund to refund victims of the DKM microfinance rip-off.

Over 63,000 customers of DKM Microfinance have lost their investments in the scam after the Bank of Ghana suspended the company’s operations for not abiding by regulations in the industry.

Speaking Monday on Accra FM, Nketia urged the NPP MPs from the Brong Ahafo region to put aside portions of their common fund for the purposes of reimbursing the lost investments of the DKM microfinance victims.

In an earlier interview, Mr. Nketia, who is also a former MP rejected calls for government intervention.

He said “…those who are complaining are they saying that when they take their individual investment decisions and things go wrong, we in government should take the taxpayers’ money – which should have been used for road [construction], electricity provision, water, schools, health centres, we should divert that money and go and pay them because they took wrong investment decisions? Is this what they want to tell us?”

Meanwhile, the victims are furious with the comments of Mr. Nketia. They therefore called on him to apologise for his “misguided” comments.

“That is an unfortunate remark from Asiedu Nketia,” said Maxwell Mahama, spokesperson for DKM microfinance victims.
