In Ghana, respect and etiquette towards the elderly in our society is held in high esteem.
Which is why there are so many of them we were trained not to do when growing up. Here are a few that are mandatory for every child.
1. You Can’t Point Directions With Your Left Hand
This might look like a simple gesture elsewhere but in Ghana, doing that will bring you a lot of rebuke from the elderly. A Ghanaian child is not allowed to use his left hand to direct someone older than him or her.
2. You Can’t Greet With Your Left Hand
It doesn’t matter what you have in your right hand or how dirty it is, even if it’s grease, you still have to greet with it with your right hand, because in our society, the left hand is seen as dirty.
3. You Can’t Eat With Your Left Hand
Ghanaian kids are not allowed to eat with their left hands whether you’re a southpaw or not, you must be forced to eat with your right. Many children have suffered in the hands of their parents all just for being a southpaw.
4. Elders Must Sit Before Children Are Allowed To Sit
In an event, when there are seats available, no child is allowed to sit till all the elders (Who usually come late) have seats before the child is allowed to sit. This is common in our commercial buses, church, gatherings etc. Even if a child is sitting and an elderly is standing, the child will receive a lot of rebuke from the people around.
5. You Must First Greet When You Enter A House
This might not be a common practice in other countries but in Ghana, when you walk into a house, you must greet whoever you meet. This is mandatory.
6. You Must Invite People Whether They Will Eat Or Not
In Ghana, we believe sharing is caring and so every child is trained to invite their friends to eat whether they like the idea or not.
7. Serving of Water
Whenever any stranger walks into your house, every kid is trained to give them water before even asking them of their mission.
8. You Can’t Stand And Eat
Children are trained not to eat while standing. It is believed when you stand and eat, you will never be satisfied and you will keep demanding for more.
9. You Can’t Walk Around Topless
Both men and women are not allowed to walk around topless because we believe will allow evil spirits to count your ribs and kill you. This just something used to scare children from walking bare-chested to prevent pneumonia.
10. Women Can’t Sit Astride
Women are not allowed to sit astride while growing up because it indicate how a slut you are or so most parents believed.
