Election 2016: UFP promises irrigation dams across Ghana

Flagbearer of the United Front Party (UFP), Dr. Nana Agyenim Boateng, says his party will give more attention to rice production and put up irrigation dams nationwide.

He says the party will demarcate strategic areas to implement this strategy.

According to him, Ghana currently produces what he termed tropical rice which is more nutritious, but lacks support to produce effectively.

“The UFP under my leadership will have a Grains Board which will be solely in charge of rice production across the country… we will not just produce rice but will include maize, millet and beans. For this to be manifested we would construct irrigation nationwide to be able to take charge of these production,” Boateng, affectionately called Gyataba, told Kessbenfm.com.

Dr Boateng revealed these irrigations will have two purposes – rearing of fishes and farming.

The UFP flagbearer also noted starch processing plant must be put up in all regions since cassava is essential in every aspect of “our daily lives”. He cited the Central, Northern, Western and Ashanti regions as areas which need these factories.

“I suggest the Agric ministry must be in one of these regions for decentralization purposes. This may sound big and an impossibility to many, but I tell you, this is practically possible unlike one-village one-dam which looks more like a ‘future impossible tense’”.
