Starr FM’s Mid-Morning show host and the ambassador for the 2016 Millennium Marathon, Naa Ashorkor, is confident of walking away with a medal at the end of the event billed for Saturday, September 3, 2016.
The versatile and ebullient presenter told Starrfmonline.com she feels complimented to have been named the 2016 ambassador for the event.
“You know, interestingly I have been training since February this year to take part in the 2016 Millennium Marathon and like they say preparations meet opportunities and surprisingly I was chosen to be the ambassador for this year’s edition.
“I feel very humbled for this opportunity and I see it as a challenge as well because for a marathon like this, it was obvious they would give it to someone who is an athlete or someone who does fitness full time … but I think it’s a major challenge considering the fitness lifestyle I have been living lately,” Naa Ashorkor said.
Naa Ashorkor added that she is confident she will win a medal after her participation in the 5km route.
“I took part last year, it was a great experience… I didn’t win a medal last year but I will win a medal come Saturday, no two ways about it… I have really prepared myself for this task, I have been going for morning and evening runs and over the weekend I did a test run and I completed the 5km route in 43 minutes but I’m hopeful I will finish the 5km route in a shorter time than my test run”.
She urged Ghanaians to exercise regularly as well as participate in the marathon to keep fit and healthy.
“People say that I’m not ready and this is for sports people but it’s not… taking part in this marathon could be the first day of the rest of your life for living a healthy or active lifestyle. You will be surprised how many diseases you can combat just by exercising and how many more years you will add to your life and it feels good aside the health benefit you get,” the actress counseled.
The Marathon was founded by Ashim Morton, a Ghanaian Entrepreneur and philanthropist to raise awareness of healthy living and promote sports tourism in Ghana.
The Millennium Marathon is run by a multinational board comprising of seasoned marathon runners, former athletes, sports broadcasters with two-time Olympic Champion and marathon legend Haile Gebreselassie as race director.
The Millennium Marathon 21km race course is an AIMS certified half marathon course with close to 15,000 participants. The race covers a unique Ghanaian scenery with the route showcasing the lovely monuments of Accra and other tourist attractions including the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the Independence Arch, the Black Star Square and the lovely beaches of Accra. There is also a 5 kilometre race for social and lifestyle, corporate and fun runners.
This year’s marathon is under the theme “Africa on the Run” – a Pan African run for Health and Peace. The race will commence at 6am at the Independence Square. Last year’s event attracted over 4000 runners from across the country and Saturday’s edition is expected to attract over 7000 runners.
