We al know the importance of education but there are times we just want to stay home and enjoy the day away from class.
Yes, this sounds dumb but that’s the feeling we get sometimes and we so want to skip school.
Kids will always be kids and for one reason or the other, they sometimes want to skip school. Some kids will go to school no matter what and will even cry when their parents ask them to stay home due to either rain or something else while other kids will pull out every trick in the book to skip school.
It wasn’t different in our time back in the day. We had a bag full of excuses that we pull out anytime we wanted to miss school. Mostly it worked.
Below are some excuses we used to skip school when we were kids.
1. I’m Sick
This is the classic excuse. Stay up in bed beyond your normal wake up time and pretend to be shivering. This could end up with you being sent to the hospital or clinic for injections but at least you still get to stay home.
2. I’m Hurt
To pull this off, either you feign injury the night before by complaining of a body part or you pretend to get injured in front of your parents in the morning while preparing for school so they don’t doubt your claim. If you’re able to pull it off well, you get the day off.
3. Teacher Won’t Come Today
This was mostly done in our primary school days since they normally have one teacher for all the subjects. You stay in bed and when you’re asked if you won’t go to school, you just tell your parents that the teacher won’t be available that day. You’ll be asked how you got that information and you respond by saying that he told the class the day before.
4. Someone Wants To Beat Me
Every parent wants the safety of his child so this excuse worked like a charm. The only drawback with this was that some parents can decide to escort their children to school to warn the bullies. But of course, we always convinced them that doing that will rather create more problems and expose us to ridicule as mummy and daddy’s kids.
Most parents won’t allow their kids to go to school only to play soccer or do anything stressful so this was a perfect excuse. Once you tell your parents there’s some school activities, meaning no learning, you get the day off. Unless you’re going to participate, your parents will be glad to have you at home.
6. I’m Late, I’ll Be Beaten
You intentionally delay with preparations and waste a lot of time. It’s either you’re are having stomach upset or there’s something preventing you from being done quickly. Once you’re done, you change your mind by telling your parents that it’s too late and you’ll be beaten when you go to school. They’ll be furious, but you still get the day off.
7. School Uniform/Shoes Damaged
You can’t pull this off if you have more than one uniform or shoe for school. You intentionally damage either your uniform or shoe. Mostly we take care of the shoe because you’re likely to have more than one uniform. Once you damage the shoe, you inform your parents that you can’t go to school because of it. Alternatives are always offered but we always had another excuse why we can’t wear them to school. Verdict, we get to stay at home.
8. School Fees
You’ll have to be owing some amount of your school fees to make this work. The truth is that the school had not given any information about sacking defaulters but you use the excuse to gain for yourself one free day since it was a normal practice to have defaulters sacked from school. Since your parents know you indeed haven’t paid all of your fees, they won’t argue.
9. Afternoon Shift
This was done back in the day when we had two shifts (morning and afternoon) for public schools. This excuse was normally done on Monday’s. Once you’re called and told to prepare for school, you just tell your parents that you’re for the afternoon shift that week. You’ll get away with this because each shift was for two weeks and it was normal for pupils to get the schedule mixed up.
You normally do this getting to the end of the term. In public schools, revision weeks are mostly left for students to learn. Not much happen academically so most people choose to rather stay at home and come to school for the exams. Like the games excuse, parents do not mind you staying home to learn.
