Thousands of cocoa farmers across Ghana can now have access to real time information and extension services via their mobile phones.
International Nongovernmental organisation, Millennium Promise Alliance Ghana and Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union have cut sod for the construction of Africa’s first Tele Agric Consultation centre in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi.
The Tele Agric Centre will serve as an information hub that provides timely and relevant information to farmers in five local languages on best agronomic and market trends.
The facility is part of kuapa kokoo sustainable development programme which seeks to introduce technology driven climate smart agriculture to farmers in Ghana.
Speaking at the sod cutting ceremony, Country Director for Ghana One Million Community Health Workers Campaign & Millennium Promise Alliance, Chief Nathaniel Ebo Nsarko emphasized that the initiative forms part of efforts at achieving the sustainable development goals on food security, ending hunger, attaining gender equality and ensuring healthy lives and promoting wellbeing across the world.
Explaining the mode of operation of the centre, he indicated, “When established, farmers will be able to call directly to the centre from their respective farm locations or communities for agricultural support. The centre will be equipped with state of the art equipments and staffed with technical and experienced officers. The centre will also have the capacity to serve over 500 thousand farmers throughout the country with no complaints of jamming of phone lines.”
He was confident the Tele Agric Consultation centre will directly improve upon the knowledge base of farmers on new agricultural technologies and strengthen the link between cocoa farmers and the relevant technical agricultural services including input and output Markets.
President of Kuapa Kokoo Farmers Union Fatima ALI commended the special adviser to the United Nations secretary general and the board chairman of the millennium promise alliance Prof. Jeffrey Sachs and his wife Dr Sonia Sachs for supporting the initiative.
She asked that farmers deem it a great opportunity to corporate with the centre, to help it achieve its aims in the country.
