Youth challenged to take advantage of YES programme in agric

Bessah Yonah

A beneficiary of the Youth Enterprise Support (YES) at Mafi Devime in the Central Tongu District of the Volta region, Bessah Yonah, has appealed to the government to invest more in agriculture.

According to him, the government must design programmes that will attract the youth to the sector. He said: “Agriculture should be made modern by putting in place all the necessary structures and tools that will attract the youth who are looking for jobs.”

Mr. Bassah was speaking to starrfmonline.com when a monitoring team led by the CEO of YES Helga Boadi paid a visit to the Bessah Yonah Farm at Devime in the Volta region.

According to him, tilapia fish farming is very lucrative and when well established can generate jobs and enhance the socio-economic wellbeing of the people, especially in the rural communities.

He stressed that he began the tilapia farming in the area after he received financial support from the YES and has since harvested his first produce where he sold over 20,000 fishes.

He observed that the demand for tilapia is very high not only in Ghana but neighboring countries, adding the current facility (fish pond) is not big enough to supply demands coming from hotels and traders.

Mr Bessah also expressed concern about the increasing activities of sand winning from the river bodies in the area. According to him, the development is affecting production since such practices pollute the river bodies in the area.

He therefore appealed to the Central Tongu District Assembly to monitor the activities of sand winners and stop providing licenses to such persons to save the water bodies from being destroyed.

The CEO of YES Ms Helga Boadi noted that there are over 100 beneficiaries. She said her outfit continues to provide training and guidance for beneficiaries to ensure that facilities given to them are put into good use.

YES is a multi-sectoral initiative operating under the Office of the President and drawing collaborative support from key agencies including the National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), National Youth Authority (NYA), Ministry of Youth & Sports, Ministry of Trade & Industry, and Ministry of Finance.

The YES boss is on a tour of the Volta region.
