Bolgatanga, Aug. 20, GNA – The Republic of
Burkina Faso will on Saturday spill the Bagre Dam which is likely to affect
some communities in the Upper East, Upper West, Northern Region and some parts
of the Brong Ahafo and Volta Regions.
A press release issued by Ms Lucy Perbi
Nyarko, the Area Manager of the Volta River Authority (VRA), called on
communities along the white and Black Volta Rivers to move to higher grounds to
avoid being affected by the spillage.
The areas in the Upper East that are likely to
be affected by the spillage include the Bawku West, Bawku Municipal, Binduri,
Talensi and Nabdam districts among others.
Ms Nyarko said it was regrettable that almost
every year the communities along the Volta Rivers refuse to move away from the
low lands after receiving information about the spillage of the dam thus
becoming victims of floods.
She said nothing could be done about the
spillage because once the dam had reached its maximum water holding capacity,
the rest had to be spilled.
“We received the message from the Burkina Faso
Authority yesterday about the spillage of the Bagre Dam. Our officers are currently in the fields
holding meeting with the political leaders of the areas likely to be affected
to persuade the people living along the Volta Rivers to re-locate “, she said.
The Bagre Dam is spilled every year and it
usually floods the White and Black Volta Rivers destroying houses and farms.
