Half-Assini (WR), Aug. 21, GNA – Fishermen in
the Jomoro District of the Western Region have been presented with 58 Yamaha
“40 horsepower” Outboard Motors to enhance their businesses.
The gesture forms part of Government’s
subsidized outboard motor package being distributed to fisherfolks in the
country to enhance their fishing activities.
Mr George William Somiah, District Chief
Executive (DCE) of the area, presented the items to the District Chief
Fisherman, Nana Emmanuel Odwiri Kwansah, at Half-Assini.
The DCE said the presentation signified
President John Dramani Mahama’s personal intervention in promoting the fishing
industry in the country.
He said the presentation was in batches and
that the next consignment of the machines would arrive in due course and urged
those who did not benefit from this initial consignment to exercise
The Chief Fisherman on behalf of the fishermen
expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the President for the gesture which he
said manifests his concern to improve fishing and agriculture in the country.
He said the gesture would go a long way to
relieve the fishermen of their financial burden in procuring outboard motors
individually in the open market at a huge cost.
He said one machine is being sold for GHȼ12, 740.00 in the
market but that with the subsidy a machine could be acquired for just GHȼ6, 000.00.
He said the items have come at a good time to
improve their local economy as the season for bumper harvest in the area has
just set in.
Nana Kwansah said the government’s
intervention in the fishing industry has been unprecedented and commended the
government for the effort.
He said recently the President also presented
outboard motors to fishermen in Axim in the
Western Region and that similar presentations have been done in Accra
and other coastal areas.
