A former Ivory Coast and Wigan Athletic player has been found dead in the River Rhine in Germany.

Steve Gohouri, 34, was reported missing by his family to German Police last month.

He had been en route to Paris to meet his family following the Christmas party of his club, TSV Steinbach.

Gohouri had a varied career, beginning his career in France with Paris Saint Germain, and went on to play for the Ivory Coast national team. He played for Wigan Athletic between 2010 – 2012.

A string of clubs in Switzerland then followed, at Yverdon-Sport, BSC Young Boys and FC Vaduz. He also played in Italy, for Bologna FC and Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany.

He played in defence for Wigan Athletic, appearing 42 times between 2010 – 2012. The club tweeted today: “We are saddened to hear reports of our former defender Steve Gohouri passing away. Our thoughts are with his family.”

He also won 12 caps playing for the national side of the Ivory Coast, where he was born.
