Journalists Urged To Avoid Peddling False Information On Ebola

The executive director of the West African Civil Society Institute, Nana Asantewa Afadzinu has called on media practitioners in Ghana to ensure accuracy in their reportage on the deadly Ebola Virus Disease.

Speaking to Univers news at an Ebola Information Session held by the West African Civil Society Institute in Accra, Mrs. Afadzinu noted that there were various sources of information on the disease however, media professionals must ensure they verify and authenticate any information they access on the disease before publicizing them.

“I think there are some positive efforts that are being made, not only by the traditional media but also on social media. There is a lot of information on Ebola. What is important to know is also what is accurate” she said.

Mrs. Afadzinaku added that it was important for government to establish a secretariat dedicated to Ebola. According to her, the secretariat will serve as a reference point where accurate and reliable information can be accessed.

West African countries such as Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia whose health system have been hit by several cases of the EVD are currently struggling to keep the deadly viral disease under control even as doctors and other health workers remain with a great risk of being infected largely because of lapses in effective communication on the disease.

The disease has so far claimed the lives of 1,900 people with over 3,500 people still infected.
