Health Minister, Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah has announced, mission and private hospitals in the country will soon benefit from government support.
According to Dr. Kwaku Agyemang Mensah, government considers these facilities as part of the overall health infrastructure and must be supported in terms of capacity building and resource allocation.
“This of course requires that they [mission and private hospitals] function in accordance with the policies and priorities of the [Health] Ministry”, the minister said.
The Minister however, did not state a specific date for commencement of this support.
Dr. Agyemang Mensah revealed this during the commissioning of a new Catholic health directorate in Wa, Thursday.
He said government’s collaboration with mission and private hospitals is of strategic importance.
“One of our [Health Ministry’s] major objective for the medium term is to ensure that all citizens of Ghana have access to basic health services”, the Minister said.
He said government is considering extending its collaboration with mission and private hospitals to also include “joint planning for the achievements of set targets…and shared responsibilities for performance”.
The Catholic Bishop for Upper West Region, Most Rev. Paul Bemile said the Catholic Church will continue to partner government to facilitate healthcare delivery in the country.
He said although the Church is aware of challenges in efforts to provide affordable healthcare, it is resolved to continue nonetheless.
“In close union with government and other stakeholders in health, we can make health accessible and affordable for all people”, said Most Rev Bemile.
