Residents and motorists in Ashaiman can now hive a sigh of relief as work on the 60 kilometer stretch of road nears completion.
According to the contractor, Kofi Job Gyebu, the project which hither to was to complete in 24 months will be done in 12 months to bring some respite to the residents.
The Kumasi based engineer said they have begun some excavation work and filling of the roads with laterite.
Mr. Kofi Job Gyedu disclosed this to a section of the media during a tour of the site on Thursday.
The about GH¢33.5 road has been abandoned by four contractors due to logistical constraints. This led to some aggrieved residents staging the demonstration and accused government of reneging on its promise.
But the road has seen a face lift and what was described as manhole instead of potholes have all been leveled with laterite and water sprayed to reduce the excess dust.
Mr. Gyedu said they are working 24 hours around the clock to ensure the road is complete. He indicated that when the road is completed it will be upgraded to three lane dual carriage.
He also called on government to support local contractors to enable them much their foreign counterparts boot for boot.
Setting the records straight
Mr. Gyedu also debunked claims he is a frontman for Ibrahim Mahama; brother of the President said to have been awarded the contract.
Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Construction Limited is alleged to have taken over the contract from Legna Construction Firm after the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly abrogated its contract.
The situation has become murkier after the vehicles and earthmoving equipments of Engineers and Planners are seen on the site.
But Kofi Job insists he is the contractor adding that he will not allow himself to be used by anybody for selfish gains.
He explained that he sought for the assistance from Engineers and Planners due to nature of the road.
“The soil is very muddy and we need mining equips to dig eight feet deep to be able us fill it with rocks and Engineers and Planners being an indigenous company was my choice” he stressed.
The Kumasi based contractors who boast of having 40 years experience called on residents to treat such allegation with the contempt it deserves and give him the necessary support to do a good work.
