Education In Crisis Says Nana

Nana Akufo-Addo addressing his audience
Nana Akufo Addo has bemoaned the growing crisis that has hit Ghana’s educational sector under the ruling National Democratic Congress government since assuming the reins of office in 2009, citing the 2014 results of the West African Senior Secondary Certificate Education (WASSCE) as a case in point.

Addressing delegates from the Volta Region on Monday, August 25 when he took his campaign to the region in his bid to lead the party in the 2016 elections, Nana Akufo-Addo stated that the West African Examinations Council has revealed that 72% of the young men and women, who sat the WASSCE failed to obtain grades A1 to C6 in six of their subjects, including Maths and English.

“7 out of the 10 children have failed the WASSCE and cannot get access to tertiary institutions. What this means is that after taken them through kindergarten, primary school, junior high and senior high, these kids end up with no certificate,” he said.

This trend, according to Nana Akufo-Addo, is a sharp departure from what was witnessed under the leadership of President Kufuor where there was an upward trend in the pass rates of students who sat the WASSCE.

In 2004, Nana Akufo- Addo stated that 40% of students who sat the SSCE (Senior Secondary Certificate Education) passed in seven subjects and above, with the pass rates increasing to 44% in 2005.

He added that in 2007, 47% of students who sat for the exam passed in seven subjects and above, instantly qualifying them to be admitted into tertiary institutions.

“In President Kufuor’s time, we saw a constant rate of passing. In our health economic, and political systems, in every aspect of our lives saw an improvement. Having inherited an economy in good shape this is where they (NDC) have left us,” Nana Addo said.

He recounted the statement made by President Mahama on October 10, 2012 when he toured some constituencies in the Volta Region in the run-up to the December 2012 elections, and promised that ‘we will do everything step by step to ensure that everybody enjoys quality education in the coming years.”

“Is this what he (President Mahama) means by quality education?” Nana Addo asked, to which delegates responded by shouting ”No!”

Nana Akufo-Addo assured Ghanaians of his commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian child gains access to free and quality education.

“If I am given the opportunity to build on the success of President Kufuor, we will make it possible for every Ghanaian child to have access to SHS and reverse these figures of the NDC,” Nana Addo stressed.

The task of governing a country is serious business, adding the reduction of this all important duty to a matter of where one hails

from by President Mahama in the run-up to the 2012 election is not the way to go,’ Akufo-Addo explained.

‘If you are experiencing hardships, will those problems be solved knowing that you hail from the same region as the President? The business of governing a country should not be reduced to where one comes from and must never be a tribal issue. We are one Ghana,” Nana Addo said.

In 2016, Nana Akufo- Addo said, “this incompetent government would have been put aside for the progressive government of the NPP. We have the plan and programme to deliver Ghanaians from the mess they have been put in under this NDC government.”
