ActionAid Ghana Girls Camp To Help Develop Aspirations Of Girls


ActionAid Ghana, in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service has brought together girls from various regional communities across the country to participate in a 10-day National Girl’s camp to inspire them to develop higher aspirations in life in Accra.

The 2014 national girls camp which was on theme “Aspire to Inspire: Empowering Girls for Community Development” is to promote assertiveness, self – esteem, and confidence building among girls and reduce marginalization, discrimination and vulnerability of girls in schools.

The camp is also aimed at ensuring gender parity and to promote quality education in violence-free environment where girls can stand for their rights and demand right from boys and other girls, and also be confident enough to challenge stereotypical masculine behaviors that affect gender relations.

Speaking at the opening of the camp, the second lady, Mrs. Matilda Amissah Arthur, advised the young girls to aspire higher to overcome any challenge to achieve greater heights in the future.

She urged them to be discipline in their daily activities and desist from friends that will lead them to activities that will ruin their future.

“The future belongs to you the youth because you are not corrupt. I want you to be disciplined in everything you do because with discipline your goals will be achieved and you must do away with peers the lead you into negative things that will destroy you”.

Gifty Anti, a veteran Journalist and President, The Girl In Need Foundation urged girls to know and stand for their rights always.

“You must always know your rights and do not allow anybody to encroach upon it. Do not be afraid to report people that abuse you sexually for their self-fish interest”.

Sumaila Abdul – Rahman, Country Director, ActionAid, asked the young girls not to see their background as a hindrance for not making it in life but their background should motivate them to aspire to make a change in their life’s and the community as a whole.

The 160 girls, who are between the ages of 11 to 15, at the camp, will be mentored in public speaking, writing skills, hygiene management and career choices by professionals and role models.

There were good well message for the girls from Amnesty International, UNICEF and Ark Foundation.
