A TRACKING DEVICE installed in a Toyota Hiace mini bus has helped the police to arrest four notorious car snatchers who had allegedly snatched the vehicle and were speeding away with it.
The suspected robbers, at gun-point, allegedly snatched the vehicle from the driver at Pakyi No, 2 near Kumasi in the Ashanti Region, and sped away, but they were eventually arrested at Kintampo in the Brong-Ahafo Region.
DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, mentioned the names of the robbers as Musah Kassim, 56, driver; Mohammed Olliver, 51, trader; Yusif Musah, 31, illegal miner and Alidu Issifu, 25, farmer, adding that the police were on the heels of another suspect mentioned as accomplice.
DCOP Kofi Boakye narrated at a press conference that on August 8, this year, around 8:15 pm, the four persons and another one at large, contacted Eric Asante Bediatuo, driver of the said Toyota Hiace, to convey them from Mbrom in Kumasi to Mankesim in the Central Region, agreeing to pay GH¢6,070 as fare for the journey. They were said to have paid GH¢3,000 to the driver.
According to DCOP Kofi Boakye, the suspects told the driver that they were going to a funeral and so he should pass through Pakyi No 2 in order for other mourners to join them.
But upon reaching a spot at Pakyi No. 2, Mohammed Kassim said he wanted to attend nature’s call and so he asked the driver to park the vehicle on the shoulder of the road.
Immediately the driver parked the car, the suspects, who were wielding locally manufactured pistols, pounced on him with hefty blows after which they forcibly seized the ignition key amidst threats that they would shoot him if he dared shout.
The suspected car snatchers then tied the driver with a rope and covered his mouth with an insulation tape after which they dumped him on the roadside and sped off.
DCOP Boakye said the driver was rescued later and he lodged a complaint with the police in Kumasi who sent a message to all police stations in Ghana, resulting in the eventual arrest of the four suspects.
He stressed that the tracking device installed in the vehicle by its owner, helped the police to locate the vehicle and arrest the suspects, urging car owners to use technology to protect their vehicles from hoodlums.
