Deputy Speaker of ECOWAS Parliament wants activities of Prez Mahama restricted as part of Ebola fight

Deputy speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Simon Osei Mensah says the ban on international conferences due to the Ebola outbreak must be extended to cover activities of President John Mahama as the Chairman of the sub-regional body.

Foreign Affairs minister Hannah Tetteh last week announced the ban to restrict movement from affected West African countries.

Mr. Osei Mensah told Joy News, the president as chairman of the sub-regional body will be holding lots of meeting in Ghana and he wants government to consider restricting some of those meetings.

“About a month ago, I attended an ECOWAS inter-institutional retreat in Calabar, Nigeria and Mr. Sawyer who was quarantined at the Lagos Airport was a participant of that particular retreat,” he explained.

Mr. Osei revealed that, “We were just fortunate that his illness intensified at the Airport and at that point we took him to the hospital following which he was quarantined. If he had arrived at the venue of the retreat you could imagine what would have happened to most of us.”

“The problem is that I don’t know the full scope that is why I was recommending that they take a second look at the restrictions,” he advised.
