The Ellembelle District Assembly on Wednesday distributed about 20 pigs, made up of 16 females and four males, to pig farmers in the district whose stocks were affected by the African swine fever.

An outbreak of African swine fever hit the Ellembelle District and its environs in the Western Region, resulting in the death of 600 pigs, in January this year.

The Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) therefore, warned against consumption of the carcasses in those areas.

MoFA also gave an assurance that it would work hard to bring the outbreak under control and also assist the affected farmers with pigs so that they could get back into business.

In fulfillment of the promise, the District Assembly, in collaboration with the regional livestock officer, Daniel Asimanu, had supplied the farmers at Anochie with the 20 pigs.

The District Chief Executive, Daniel Eshun, indicated that from time to time officers from MoFA would be visiting the farmers to educate them on how they could properly take care of the animals so they they would not contract the disease anymore.

He stressed the need for them to form cooperative associations so that they could easily access loans from financial institutions to expand their farms.

He underscored that farmers in other communities whose pigs were also affected by the disease would soon get their share of the new pigs from MoFA.
