Two Killed In Bawku

The latest killing of a 16-year-old boy, Alhassan Hadi, in front of his father’s house and Tijani Issaka, an amputee teacher, has thrown the municipality into another state of fear and panic, after the false Ebola scare some weeks ago.

Two other persons, who sustained gunshot injuries, were still on admission at the time of filing this report yesterday.

A DAILY GUIDE source in Bawku said the deceased were among a group of people sitting in front of a house belonging to the father of the late Alhassan Hadi, when the gunmen attacked from nowhere. They     (gunmen) fled soon after shooting several times into the group.

The Bawku Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Tefutor Kaletsi, in a brief interview with DAILY GUIDE, said no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting and that he had been urging the people in the area to help the police to bring the perpetrators to book.

‘The area is a densely populated one and I believe that people might have seen these criminals running away after the incident; and I wish that people will be bold and patriotic enough to help the police with information on this issue,’ he underscored.

According to the Divisional Commander, the indications in the shooting could not be linked to the old chieftaincy dispute that plagued the Bawku Traditional Area some time ago, saying that the incident is a criminal matter and so the police would handle it as such.

Some months ago, there were reports about inadequate means of transport for the police to patrol the Bawku Municipality with, but the Divisional Police Commander told DAILY GUIDE that there were enough vehicles to complement the foot patrol in the area.

It is feared that this recent shooting could open the floodgate for more

criminal acts in the area, if the police did not
intensify their visibility. Residents are also expected to be very

vigilant and ready to point out criminals for arrest.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister, Mark Woyongo, has called for calm in the midst of the volatile situation.

Mr. Woyongo described the incident as unfortunate and regrettable because ‘We’ve come a very long way with regards to peace in Bawku.’

He is confident the security agencies would work within time to arrest the perpetrators of the crime.

According to him, ‘There is nowhere those people can hide; no place for them to hide; we’ll smoke them out,’ assuring the people that everything would be done to bring the perpetrators to book.
