Winneba, (C/R) Aug. 14, GNA – A Former Head of State of Nigeria, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd) has called for a clear new policy on education for Africa geared towards producing critical minds and problem solvers, particularly, in the Sciences.

‘Establishing a knowledge economy requires high quality and affordable higher education that is supported by a well-funded research and development regime and underpinned by a sound information and communication infrastructure,’ he said.

He was speaking at a Special Congregation Lecture of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) on Wednesday. The Theme for Congregation is: ‘Sustaining Excellence in Educational Leadership for Accelerated National Development’.

Addressing the topic, ‘The role of Education in Developing Society’, Gen. ‘The era of uncreative and authoritarian despotism is over in Africa,’ he declared.

He stressed that that, only education could guarantee Africa’s future in true democracy.

The Former leader said education opens up new worlds and visits for people and liberates the mind from variety of prejudices.
