Ghanaian Wins Bill & Melinda Gates Scholarship To Attend TEDGlobal Conference


Mr Emmanuel Leslie Addae, the Curator for the very successful TedxLabone 2014 event has won a scholarship to attend the 2014 TEDGlobal Conference from 3rd to 12th of October 2014 in Rio, Brazil.

Dubbed the TEDxChange, the Global Conference is being supported with scholarship to over 14 past TEDx event organisers under the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These organisers will therefore have the opportunity to meet some amazing people from all over the world coming together to share ideas.

Emmanuel Leslie Addae was nominated after organising a Tedx event, TedxLabone successfull in his community in Accra in April this year.

Speaking to the Communication Team of TedxLabone, who are feverishly preparing for next year’s event, Emmanuel Leslie expressed his excitement at the opportunity granted him to witness a TED event at the highest level being TEDGlobal.

His expectations range from meeting new people and learning better ways of organising TED Events. He will also have the chance at the conference to network with thought leaders from around the world, TED Fellows and TED Prize winners, as well as attend TEDx-specific workshops to learn and brainstorm with TED staff and other TEDx event organizers.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation collaborates with TEDx to raise awareness around global health and development through TEDxChange, and to develop programs to help bring new information and ideas to underdeveloped communities. As part of this partnership, the Foundation is proud to offer scholarships to selected TEDx organizers to experience an official TED Conference.

TEDxChange Scholarships cover the cost of pre-selected TEDx organizers from across the globe to attend official TED Conferences.

Consequently, the TEDx scholarship winners’ airfare, hotel, transportation to and from the event venue, and that of TED Conference’s registration fee are taken care of by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

After the conference ends, the TEDxChange Scholarship recipients including Mr Emmanuel Leslie Addae will return home to implement locally what they have learnt from the conference in order to grow their TEDx community.

Ultimately, attendees of TEDGlobal will gain a renewed energy and dedication towards TEDx, thereby bringing more opportunities for idea-sharing in their local communities.

Attending an official TED Conference also gives organizers the privilege of hosting a TEDx event with more than 100 attendees, expanding the reach of TED and TEDx in their communities.

A Tedx Event is a locally independently organized Ted Conference.

TedxLabone 2015 dubbed the “The Next Chapter” which will take place at the National Theatre on 11th April, 2015; is set to thrill audience.

With 2014 event focusing on Informing, Empowering and Educating, where speakers informed, empowered and educated audience on their ideas, the next chapter of Ghana’s success story must now be told.

With TEDxLabone2015, the theme is, The Next Chapter is simple appropriate, as Ghana is barely 5 years from the year 2020, and all attentions are drawn towards achieving what the President calls “Vision 2020”.

At a TEDx event, TEDTalks videos and live speakers combine to spark deep discussions and connections. Therefore speakers’ presentations will be interspersed with musical and other entertaining performances.
