Senior Linguistics Lecturer at the University of Ghana Legon, Professor Kofi Agyekum has appealed to the Electoral Commission (EC) to change equipment used in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
He said it was inappropriate for the EC to continue to use the same equipment which caused a lot of trouble during the 2012 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Continuous use of these equipment he says, is likely to mare the smooth registration process and hamper information that may be recorded for the register.
The Commission commenced daily registration of new eligible voters in accordance with the requirements under the new electoral regulation C.I 72 of the Public Elections Regulation of the 1992 constitution.
However, decision by the EC to allow new eligible voters to use National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards for the registration was greeted with rejection from some members of the public.
Abu Ramadan, National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Evans Nimako won a suit they filed at the Supreme Court, preventing the Electoral Commission from using NHIS Cards as identification for the registration process.
The court also ruled that existing voter identity cards other than the biometric cards issued for the 2012 elections can be used for the registration.
However the registration process has been plagued with some violence in the Ashanti Region prompting the Regional Police Commander to issue strong warnings to leadership of the two main political parties in the region.
Professor Agyekum said on Kokrokoo on Peace FM, Tuesday, the registration process could only be smooth if Parliamentarians do not pick under-aged people to register in a bid to get votes during the elections.
He said, no true MP who is interested in the development of the country will do anything that will put the voters register in jeopardy, adding that, people will only vote for true and trustworthy MPs.
He advised the general public to assist the EC by reporting minors who register to ensure that the registration process goes on smoothly.
