Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Communications, says the government has invested a total $ 8.5 million in the construction of grade A ICT project.
He said the project, when completed, is expected to generate 10,000 direct and indirect jobs for Ghanaians.
Speaking at the presentation of 600 computers and accessories to 40 Community Information Centers (CICs) valued at GH¢28,500 in Accra, he said several international organizations were in talks with the ministry on the way forward.
Dr. Omane Boamah stated that government intends to link the CICs to the project so that citizens, irrespective of geographical location, could gain access to the internet.
Dr. Omane Boamah disclosed that so far work on 140 out of about 160 CICs had been completed and gave the assurance that 20 CICs would be completed by the end of the year.
He however urged the District Chief Executives (DCEs) and the CIC mangers to make very good use of the computers and accessories, insisting that maintenance should be a cardinal principle in the beneficiary communities.
Kofi Attor, Chief Executive of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication (GIFEC), said the agency was committed to its mandate of bridging the digital divide though the provision of rural telephony project.
Beneficiary communities included Agona, Tepa, Akontombra, Afransie, Mankesim and Kaleo.
The CIC is a hybrid profit-making tele-centre and non-profit community resource centre intended to provide business services and community development information to remote communities.
The centre provides connectivity to the Ministries, Departments and Agencies, private businesses and educational institutions, as well as individuals in beneficiary rural communities.
