Some of the people being screened at Basofinigo
POS FOUNDATION, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Accra, has provided free medical healthcare to about 500 people at Assin Basofinigo in the Assin North Municipality of the Central Region.
The initiative was aimed at addressing the health problems of the inhabitants in deprived communities in Assin North and South Assemblies respectively, where it is difficult to access health as well as empower the youthful population in this area.
The beneficiaries were drawn from Assin Edubiase, Nsuta, Assin Basofinigo, Akropong Dumase, among other communities.
They were screened for all kinds of disease and were later provided with medicine worth several hundreds of Ghana cedis.
The Executive Director of POS Foundation, Jonathan Osei- Owusu, said the progamme formed part of their social responsibility towards the people in the country.
He bemoaned the doctor to patients’ ratio in the country, saying, ‘While the other statistics gives the ratio to be 1:10,380 when we compare this figures to that of the World Health Organisations (WHO) the revised standard ratio for Ghana is about 1:600 and this figure is very alarming.’
‘Rural patients to doctor ratio is even worse as common doctors are forced to treat any and all cases that come into the hospital, regardless of its specialisation,’ he added.
The Assin North Municipal Health Director, Georgina Asimadi, commended the NGO for their laudable initiative.
Dr Asimadi underscored the need for the people in the area to ensure cleanliness in their surroundings to reduce the high rates of cholera outbreak in the country.
