Using the power of drama to fight malnutrition- the SOS way

The SOS Village has taken the fight against malnutrition to an exciting new level using the power of drama to fight the canker.

There is a 54% mortality rate for children under five years, thanks to malnutrition, the Ghana Medical Journal has said.

One out of every five children in Ghana is malnourished. The situation is dire. The children from the SOS villages across the country are not spared the harsh realities of malnourishment.

The government has been involved in the fight against malnutrition but only to a limited extent because money is hard to come by.

In the mist of what appears to be a difficult situation comes, My Name is Romance, a sizzling theatre masterpiece that will not only be used to create awareness about malnutrition, but also to raise funds to fight it.

Individuals, corporate organisations, religious and social groups and the general public are invited to support this event at the National Theatre with their donations and also to patronise ticket sale to help a noble cause.

My Name is Romance set to be staged on 29 August, 2014 will be fun packed; conservative and liberal standpoints on contemporary wedding ceremonies will be played side-by-side; ribs will be cracked; relationships will be scrutinised and in the end funds will be raised to fight malnutrition.

Nii Commey, writer and director of the play, and who also doubles as the Communications Director of the SOS Villages says the drama will be used to improve cognitive development and prevent Nutritional disorders to the body and ensure holistic growth and development by providing and sustaining good nutrition.

“This year’s fundraising is, therefore, targeted at providing good nutrition to about 3,000 children in the SOS Children’s Villages Ghana, he said in a statement.

He added the Millenium Development Goal 4 is committed to reducing two –thirds (2/3) of under-five mortality by the year 2015 which is barely a year away, a goal the SOS is committed to.
