Political Parties Agree To Collaborate Effectively And Efficiently For The 2016 General Elections

Registered Political Parties in Ghana have agreed and consented to the formation of the Association of Political Parties in Ghana (APPG) at the Head Office of Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) 4th August 2014.

The association was initially pioneered by six registered political parties such as Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP), Democratic People’s Party (DPP), United Front Party (UFP), Yes People’s Party (YPP), Independent People’s Party (IPP), and New Vision Party (NVP).

The core objectives of the association are to assist member Political Parties where possible in matters of administration, management ethics and inter-political relationships, and also collaborate with donor agencies and non-governmental organizations to organize Presidential debates for the Presidential Candidates of member Parties during national general elections.

The Association of Political Parties in Ghana (APPG) shall strongly defend member Political Parties and their leaders from external aggression and intimidation.

The second meeting of the Association welcome the entry of two members namely Jacob Osei Yeboah(2012 Independent Presidential Candidate) and Akua Donkor(Founder & Leader of the Ghana Freedom Party, GFP). Jacob Osei Yeboah personally attended the meeting to offer unflinching support to the association and pledges to join this powerful movement for change. Akua Donkor was also affirmed her Party membership to the association through a telephone conversation.

Now the membership of APPG stands at eight and we are still inviting other Political Parties and Independent Presidential Candidates to join us to collectively improve the practice of multi-party democracy in Ghana.

The member Political Parties and the 2012 independent Presidential candidate submitted their proposals to the association and these proposals shall be put together to constitute the legal and administrative structural framework of the association. The proposals were referred to the Interim Legal Committee of the association headed by an astute lawyer, Mr. Thomas N. Ward Brew for legal Considerations.

According to Dr. Henry Herbert Lartey (Leader & 2012 Presidential Candidate of GCPP), Political Parties without representatives in Parliament has been marginalized for so long by the Institute of Economic Affairs and the Electoral Commission of Ghana and he said it is about time the Political Parties without representatives in Parliament unite to fight against this Political and Constitutional injustices.

Dr. Henry Lartey emphasizes that with unity and effective cohesion the Association of Political Parties in Ghana (APPG) can change the course of democracy in Ghana and serves as alternative ‘Third Force’ to the NDC and NPP.

Mr. Thomas N. Brew stated that the Association of Political Parties in Ghana (APPG) shall serve as proper body for the mobilization of financial and logistics resources for member Political Parties, and also the association will foster a good inter-political relationship between member Political Parties and the Electoral Commission of Ghana.

The view of Akua Donkor through a telephone conversation was that the unnecessary intimidation by the Electoral Commission towards the smaller Political Parties is becoming unbearable and nuisance. She believes that the requirement by the Electoral Commission to have Offices across all the 275 Constituencies is bogus and that requirement by the Electoral Commission should be repealed. According to Akua Donkor the formation of this association is a laudable idea and she commits her Party to the association.

Jacob Osei Yeboah was impressed by the formation of this association that equally gives recognition to Independent Presidential Candidates to join. He believes that if this association is organized well, it will be a threat to the survival of the NDC and the NPP on the Political landscape of Ghana.

According to Jacob Osei Yeboah the formation of this association of bringing Political Parties and Independent Presidential Candidates together under one umbrella is a very good project and he is fully in support of this movement for change towards the 2016 general elections.

Meanwhile, the member Political Parties have agreed to collaborate and support each Political Party effectively and efficiently as far as the 2016 general elections is concern.
