Farmers and suppliers of Shea nuts, soya beans and maize in the three northern regions have hailed the decision by a private investor, Nuts for Growth (N4G), to set up a state-of-the-art nuts factory in the north.

The project, according to the farmers, would lessen their burden of transporting several tonnes of the produce down south.

It would also be an avenue of creating jobs for residents in the areas mentioned above thereby reversing the trend where girls in those communities migrate to the major towns and cities to work as head porters, popularly known as ‘Kayayei.’

Despite the huge potential in the industry – which has the capacity of transforming lives of the people of the north – the farmers observed that some purchasing companies were in the habit of robbing suppliers and farmers of their wealth by using unapproved measuring scales to purchase their produce.

Secretary of the farmers’ association, Emmanuel Alhassan Alhasan, alleged that some companies consistently refused to pay bonuses and commissions due various male and female groups and called for an end to the practice.
