A Cape Coast High Court has sentenced a fisherman to death by hanging for setting ablaze five children, resulting in the death of one.
The fisherman, Kobena Amakye, was also sentenced to a three-year prison term for the burns sustained by the other four children.
Amakye on April 21, 2012, while resting at home after a long day of fishing, was allegedly rudely awakened by the playful noise coming from the children who were in a neighbouring house.
The fisherman, from Moree in the Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese (AAK) District of the Central Region, infuriated by the noise, went into his room, developed a bomb with cement papers and premix fuel and threw it in the direction of the noisy children.
One of the kids, ten-year old Kweku Mensah, died as a result of the blaze whilst the other victims, aged between six and ten years, suffered various degrees of burns on their bodies.
Kobina Amakye was arrested by the Kotokuraba District Police Command from his hideout around the Cape Coast Castle and put before a Cape Coast Magistrate Court presided over by Kwame Ohemeng Mensah. Hannah Taylor, a Chief State Attorney, was the prosecutor of the case.
